Maluma Took Us to “Hawái” at the 2020 MTV VMAs, But He Ended His Night on the Moon

One thing I loved about the MTV VMAs this year was the fact that you could feel the Latin music presence. Maluma was one of the artists in charge of bringing the beauty of our culture to the event with a performance of his brand new single, “Hawái.”

Carrying on the tropical vibes to the stage, with neon palm trees and dancers that looked ready to take a dip in the ocean, Maluma had the first Spanish performance of the night from Brooklyn's Skyline Drive-In and in front of a live audience safely watching from a lineup of Toyota vehicles.

Although “Hawái” has become the anthem for the brokenhearted, Maluma seemed very upbeat as he took the stage to sing, at the same time his song finished the week as the #2 on Global YouTube Music Videos Chart.

After leaving everyone like the heart-eyed emoji, Maluma’s night only got better when In The Heights star Anthony Ramos presented him with the award for Best Latin, for his song “Qué Pena” with J Balvin.

This was Maluma’s first moonperson ever, and his excitement was visible. “I can’t believe this,” he said in Spanish and English, as he held his prize. “I’m gonna say it in Spanish though, because I feel very proud of being Latin,” he went on to add during his acceptance speech.

He thanked his fans and his family, adding that everything he does he does it for them. “It’s incredible that J Balvin and I came out of Medellín, Colombia and were able to make this song, ‘Qué Pena,’” he said, later thanking Balvin, who couldn’t make it as he continues to recover from Coronavirus.

Maluma was nominated against Anuel AA’s “China,” Bad Bunny’s “Yo Perreo Sola,” J Balvin’s “Amarillo,” Black Eyed Peas’ “Mamacita,” and Karol G and Nicki Minaj’s “Tusa.”
